Ariellah Intensive Weekend
15 hour intensive dance study with world class dancer and teacher Ariellah
Ariellah is an international fusion dancer, performer and instructor with much passion in her heart for life, for music, for love…
She has an extensive dance background that includes strict classical ballet training for 12 years with the Royal Academy of Dance from London. She has studied and performed belly dance since 2001, commencing her training with Janine Ryle of Danse Mahgreb and as a founding member of The Indigo with Rachel Brice. In 2009, Ariellah began training in classical Indian Odissi dance, studying in India at the Shakti School of Dance and currently continues her studies of this dance form yearly with Colleena Shakti. Ariellah’s style infuses many genres of dance, all with a modern dark flavour that is uniquely her own. Her dance manifests what is deep in her heart and expresses her own experience and perceptions of this wondrous and tragic thing called life.
Ariellah’s three day mini-intensive immersion is designed to help aid and elevate the fusion artist’s mastery of both technique and dance expression. The focus of the Portal to Walpurgus 2018 will revolve around expression, intention and being a more powerful and dynamic dancer on stage. The course will require 3 hours of training the first day and 6 hours each day for the remaining 2 days. The intensive will include dance and conditioning, alongside lecture, discussion and group exercises, mostly revolving around expression and dynamics, within technique and choreography. Each day will begin with conditioning exercises that both strengthen and stretch the body and mind as well as help to ground and center the dancer for better focus in his/her practice. Each day there will be a special topic revolving around the ideas and concepts of expression, intention, theatrics, dance vocabulary, choreography and also technique. Dance movement, dance expression and intention exercises will be executed in order to bring the full picture to life of what it means to be a well-rounded dancer. Some theory and lecture on corresponding topics will be given daily. This will be a program that asks for a disciplined practice and will ask the dancer to give much of themselves in order to grow in their dance practice and pathway. Some homework will be requested to be completed before the intensive and also during the intensive. This dance intensive is open to beginning advanced dancers and intermediate dancers.
Friday: Foundation: Condition Your Body, Know Your Vocabulary
Friday’s focus will revolve around conditioning the body, bettering technique and intimately discussing and knowing your dance terminology.
Ariellah will walk the dancer through exercises that awaken, strengthen and stretch each part of the body, in relation to our dance practice. Dynamic drills involving arms, chest, hips and belly, will be explored. Ariellah hopes to show the dancer new ways of drilling that motivate even more practice! Terminology and tribal fusion vocabulary will be revealed, explained and explored along the way as an added bonus!
Saturday: Express Yourself
Stage presence is the essence of a dancer’s being that is projected when they expose themselves, connecting with the audience, making them feel something. It’s also what separates artists from technicians.” Building upon the previous day’s technical practice, Saturday’s workshop will compliment those teachings with an exploration of “dance expression and stage presence”. In this workshop the dancer will work through exercises that help develop intention in one’s dance and gain the confidence and understanding of what it takes to be a strong presence on stage, including work on stage presence, expression and story telling. Learn to engage the audience, learn to step into character, push out of your comfort zone and add depth to your performance pieces. Also, delve deeper into yourself and allow that element to come through in your dance. What do you have to say? The stage itself will also be examined, in relation to its use in conveying stronger stage presence. Ariellah will provide discourse, thoughts, tips, practical ideas, exercises and more, to the dancer who wants to be more powerful and dynamic in their public performances.
Sunday: Compelling Choreography
Compelling Choreography Composition Creation will be taught, so as to bring together all that has been worked on, practiced and discussed in the previous 2 days of work. Choreography composition will be discussed and explored revolving around the elements that make up a strong performance piece and also the development of a strong performance piece including storyline, character and emotion, will be offered in this workshop. Ariellah will also discuss what makes a choreography more dynamic, rich, strong and interesting…Compelling, changing, charismatic, progressive, powerful, magnetic, influential and effective! The dancer will be given the tools to create his or her own dynamic combinations and choreography on their own, elevate and work on technique at the same time, and take his or her dance to the next level!
